The Council of Former Presidents is completely informal, it has no statutes, no bylaws and it does not meet regularly. It is invisible at almost all times. During his term as ISBRA president (2002-2006), Dr. Toshikazu Saito of Japan, invited his colleagues to form such an informal group should ISBRA ever need high-ranked and broad international support. It was meant to act only in very unusual circumstances when asked by the current president and board.
There has never been a more important time to activate the Council than in 2021. Two unforeseeable events had put ISBRA into a financial crisis: the typhoon catastrophe in Japan 2018 leading to extensive flooding just before the ISBRA conference in Kyoto, and the Covid-19 pandemic, which deeply affected the 2020 ISBRA/RSA conference in New Orleans. Both meetings, usually the regular income of ISBRA for two years, experienced a deficit. Consequently, ISBRA’s financial year balance dropped substantially jeopardizing its functioning.
Rosana Camarini with the help of members of the Finance Committee (Tamara Phillips, Paula Hoffman, Helmut Seitz), called upon the Council of Former ISBRA Presidents to consider donating money to ensure the continued functioning of ISBRA. Karl Mann (President 2010-2012) was asked to coordinate this effort.
Today we gratefully announce the success of this campaign. It resulted in roughly 45,000 US dollars donated by six former presidents and a number of former board members (for details see the ISBRA website). We want to express our sincere gratitude to all donors for their incredible generosity.
